Maryland Tourism Area and Corridor Signing Statewide:
2001 - 2008

In 2001, the Maryland State Highway Administration invited Informing Design to use its state as the test bed for its "Haptics Mapped" travel routings. By 2005, we had developed the conceptual basis for a new approach to traffic signing for BWI Airport and surrounding region, and completed pilot sign projects in two counties on the Eastern Shore. In 2006, Informing Design completed a master set of guidelines for what was now being called “Tourism Area and Corridor” signing, guidelines designed to serve as a new national model for organizing guidance on a regional to community level. This included a new design standard for expressway signs as well. Informing Design was then charged with one of the largest tourism-signing projects ever undertaken: replacing the entire state’s body of tourism signing.
